c-jay - exploring the netherlands - mix CD

The ever quality-consistent Baroque label is one of those major sources for all things proggy, and included in their catalogue is their Exploring The... series. In short, these series give producers the chance to define their native country's (or region's) sound. Following up on Hernan Cerbello (Exploring South America) and Slok (Exploring Italy), is Dutch C-Jay steps for Exploring The Netherlands: a trip through the Dutch side of progressive electronic music.

C-Jay is among the Netherland's hottest export products in the field of progressive (psy-)trance who has been releasing an impressive number of releases on labels such as Baroque, Cyber and Armada as well as a brilliant artist album (Magnanimity, releases last year). For his Baroque mix, C-Jay dove into his record box and dug up a selection of tunage by Dutch DJ/producers, including big names such as Eelke Kleijn, Leron & Yves Eaux and Francesco Pico.

The main sound of the album can be defined as progressive house with (psy)trancey elements and occasional techy beats. The album opens rather easy going, with the mysterious Muzik Is The Drug by Philogresz and the dark prog-house stomper Pretpakket by Eelke Kleijn. From that point on, C-Jay serves up more techier material such as Sven Hauck solid grooving Dark Tide, a tune full of moving bass sounds, deep percussion and loads of dark atmosphere.

The mix continues to switch from deep and dark to more mainstream and sparkling tunage, with each tune blending in perfectly. Greg Lacy's Problems serves up a fresh dose of edgy trance elements, providing the mix with a fat hands-in-the-air moment, afte which Daniel Wanrooy, one of the biggest trance talents delivers a majestic trancey cut with several layers of entrancing melodies and, most importantly, a fantastic overall vibe. Closing the CD is a tune by C-Jay himself: Song For Sophie, a very proggy, very spacey cut with great synth work and a proper trancey bite. A great finish to this outstanding mix.

Exploring The Netherlands serves up some of the hottest material The Netherlands have to offer in the field of progressive house and trance. C-Jay has managed to create a very diverse flow of music, with each track having its own well thought position in the mix. The nifty sequencing and great choice of record make this a CD to enjoy over and over again. One to blow your car speakers with this coming summer, word to that.
